Sol and Alice have recently bought a home in a community named Maneless Grove. While Alice is ecstatic at the new step in their lives, Sol is reserved. Sol has been dealing with a career setback as her position at Yale is tenuous due to an allegation of plagiarism. Sol has dealt with anxiety for most of her life, but her job woes, coupled with the move, leave her nerves frayed. Sol’s demeanor does not benefit from her initial introduction to the welcoming committee from her new neighborhood. The new neighbors are either too saccharine, pushy, or possibly intolerant. Alice urges Sol to be patient and give Maneless Grove a chance. However, Sol begins to see & hear things that leave her questioning the safety of their house and their neighbors’ intentions. “Buyer Beware” has never seemed so prescient a thought until now.

We Came to Welcome You pulls no punches in its relentless assault on the perils of conformity. Author Vincent Tirado(“Don’t Swim Here”) has written a truly inspired yet terrifying book that explores discrimination, identity, and trauma. Tirado’s talent for generating chilling moments shines throughout this disturbing yet beautiful gem.
